10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a REALTOR®


Here are ten helpful questions to ask an Edmonton REALTOR® before hiring them to help you buy or sell your home.

1. Are You a Licensed REALTOR®?

“REALTOR®” is a specific designation given only to professionals who have completed a certain level of real estate education and training. In addition to completing ongoing (mandatory) learning, REALTORS® are fully licensed, strictly governed, and required to maintain a high standard of excellence.

2. Do You Work as a Full-Time Agent? 

Full-time agents are more likely to provide you with full-time attention.


3. How Long Have You Been a REALTOR®?

How much experience does your prospective agent have? How well do they know the market? If your REALTOR® is new to the industry (that’s ok!), do they have a team, or other experienced agent, guiding and/or supporting them throughout the transaction?


4. For Buyers: How Will You Help Me Find the Right Home? 

A good Edmonton REALTOR® will take great care in helping your zero-in on your specific wants and needs. They know the right questions to ask to help you find a home and community you love at a price point you can afford.

5. For Sellers: How Many Homes Have You Sold In My Neighbourhood Over the Last Year?

A REALTOR® with selling experience in your area will automatically have a better understanding of neighbourhood demographics and how to price your home for a quick and profitable sale.


6. Do You Work With a Team? 

Will the agent be handling every aspect of the transaction, or will they rely on the support of other team members throughout the process? While both have their benefits, you’ll know someone will always be available to help you in a team scenario.


7. How Many Clients Are You Currently Working With?

Busy is a good sign in that your real estate agent is experienced, reputable and fully immersed in their profession. However, an agent that’s too busy may not be able to provide the care and attention you deserve.



8. How Do Your Fees Work? 

In most real estate transactions, fees are typically paid by the seller. Regardless, a good Edmonton agent will be upfront and honest regarding compensation, whether it be a flat rate, negotiable fee, traditional percentage, etc.

9. Do You Have Any References I Can Contact? 

Don’t be afraid to ask for (and reach out to) the agent’s most recent clients. How was their experience? Did their transaction go smoothly? Would they recommend the REALTOR’s® services to their closest family and friends?


10. How Will You Keep In Touch? 

Will your REALTOR® be keeping in touch by phone, text or email? How often can you expect to hear from them? Navigating the home buying and selling process can leave you with plenty of questions, so you’ll want to ensure you can communicate with your agent as often as you need.
